How to Upload Files in WordPress

WordPress, the popular content management system (CMS), makes it easy to upload images, PDFs, audio files, videos, and most other types of files to your website. Read on to find out how.

Uploading

To upload files, first enter the WP Admin panel and log in if you are not already logged in (get there by appending “/wp-admin/” to the URL of your homepage).

Method 1: Media Panel

  1. Mouse over the “Media” tab on the left sidebar and click “Add New” in the menu that pops up.
  2. Click “Select Files” and navigate to the file(s) you wish to upload.
    1. Note: You can select multiple files in Windows with Ctrl+Click (to select and deselect individual files), Shift+Click (to select an entire consecutive block of files) and Ctrl+A (to select all files in the current folder).
  3. Press Enter or click “Open”.
  4. When all the relevant files show as 100% below, the upload is complete.
  5. You can view and edit the uploaded files by clicking “Media” and then clicking on each file. You should give them descriptive titles.

Method 2: Within a Page

You can also upload files within a specific page or post.

  1. Navigate to a page or post via either the front-end or back-end. If in the front-end, click the “Edit” button in the top toolbar. If you do not see this toolbar, check that you are logged in to WP Admin.
  2. Click the “Add Media” button near the top of the editing page.
  3. Click the “Upload Files” tab.
  5. Press Enter or click “Open”.
  6. When all the blue progress bars have filled up, the upload is complete.
  7. You can view and edit the uploaded files by clicking on them. You should give them descriptive titles.

Linking to an Uploaded File

  1. Navigate to the page or post in which you wish to link to the file via either the front-end or back-end. If in the front-end, click the “Edit” button in the top toolbar. If you do not see this toolbar, check that you are logged in to WP Admin.
  2. Click the “Add Media” button near the top of the editing page.
  3. Find and select the uploaded file in the panel that appears. If you just uploaded it, it should be at the top; otherwise, you may need to scroll down to find it.
  4. In the URL field to the right, triple-click the URL text so that it is highlighted in its entirety. Copy it with Ctrl+C or right click > Copy.
  5. Close the Insert Media panel, returning to the editing screen of the page/post.
  6. Find the text which you wish to link to the file and highlight it.
  7. Click the paperclip icon:  wordpress_paperclip_icon
